The body of Md Anwarul Azim, lawmaker for Jhenaidah-4 constituency and president of Kaliganj upazila Awami League, was recovered from a residence in Kolkata’s New Town on Wednesday, after being missing for the last eight days, according to reports of local media of Kolkata.
Anwar went to India’s Kolkata for treatment on May 12.
His phone remained ‘switched off’ since May 14.
After being unable to contact him, Anwarul’s family contacted with prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the prime minister’s office communicated with the Bangladesh embassies in Delhi and Kolkata.
The Bangladesh embassy and the Kolkata Police started an investigation to find the missing lawmaker.
Later, the lawmaker’s body was recovered from the residence of Newtown. Local police are investigating the incident.
According to local media, Anwar stayed at the house of his friend named Gopal Biswas in Baranagar, from May 12 till May 14.
On May 14 he left Gopal’s house for a day. He was supposed to return to the house on May 15. As the lawmaker did not return the next day, worried Gopal went to the police station and filed a missing diary.
India and Bangladesh authorities were looking for the missing lawmaker.
Online portal kolkata24x7.in said that the police launched a probe into the incident.
